Philosophy, the Federalist, and the Constitution
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (March, 1989)

Philosophy, the Federalist, and the Constitution
Morton White's, Philosophy, The Federalist, and the Constitution is a classic work on how the Founding Fathers arrived on how they wanted their new nation's government to be established. From Publius's ideas on principles of natural rights which are tested by examining the relations between ideas, whereas statements asserting that firm and efficient government would be in the true interest of the people are tested by experience.

Humeian empiricism in politics and Lockeian rationalism in morals are also playing a part with their respective writings. After reading White's book you get a better feel and appreciation as to the ardous task the Founding Fathers had taken, establishing a government like none seen previous. The book is a valuable reference and is clearly written.

Impeccably written, grounding the reader in the terms of technical philosophy and rich scholarship, one has to appreciate this work as a valuable resource.

This book is brilliant and illuminating for the student examining the origins of the constitution.

The Portable Conrad (Viking Portable Library (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (December, 1976)
Authors: Joseph Conrad, Morton Dauwen Zabel, and Ferris
Average review score:

Two Book Length Novels, Three Long Tales, Six Short Stories

I was amazed to see that I am the first to review this classic book. I borrowed this book and brought it with me to read while helping deliver a yacht.

The trip was a memorable one, for many reasons, not least among them was finishing "The Nigger in the Narcissus" a story of a dying black man's anger during last days of life aboard a ship, "Typhoon" the story of a steam trapped in a hurricane, and "Youth" the story of a second mate's trip to Asia on a dilapidated ship.

I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the storms in "Narcissus " and "Typhoon".

It is said that truth is stranger than fiction. Conrad's stories may be fiction, but they evoke a sense of realism that no other author manages to capture.

Conrad, a Pole, is arguably the best English writer of all time. His characters are unique and real, and the stories are real world, challenging situations that are unpredictable and yet follow the laws of human nature, and are therefore somewhat more than real.

This book is a nice compact size and print in type that is also easy to read. There is enough material here to carry with you on your voyage, wherever that may be.

If you want to bring only one book with you on your next trip, this would be a good choice.

President Ron's Appointment Book
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (May, 1988)
Authors: Morton Mintz and Margaret Mintz
Average review score:

the only book on Ronald Reagan you will EVER NEED TO READ.
This is the only book about RR that I have found that even seems to be remotely factual. The saying "actions speak for themselves" could never be truer. This is the only book on Ronald Reagan you will ever need to read. You will see very quickly what this man was all about and surely enjoy the 'colorful' stories about those that worked for him. READ THIS BOOK!

Prince Charles: Breaking the Cycle
Published in Hardcover by Ebury House (February, 1999)
Author: James Morton
Average review score:

The Story of an Underrated Humanitarian and His Work
It is unusual for an author whose field is business and finance to write a book about a member of the British Royal Family; it is also unusual to see a book which focuses on Prince Charles' working life -- primarily his efforts to help disadvantaged young people. Given the constant media fascination with the Prince's private life, one might have feared that the Prince's obituary would have to be published before anyone thought to write such a book. Improving the lot of disadvantaged youth has been one of the Prince's primary causes since the 1970s, when he was a young man himself. The author estimates that the Prince has, through the Prince's Trust and related ventures, helped some 600,000 individuals to date -- including ethnic minorities, the disabled, and even youth with criminal records -- and that he spends over half of his working time in this cause. Morton describes the training courses, volunteer activities, grants, and other programs involved, and gives fascinating case histories. The Prince of Wales described by James Morton is a caring man who hates to see young lives go to waste, and has spent years using his position to do something about it. His position has not necessarily always made the task easy; he has often faced opposition from various sectors of society, and even from members of his own staff, but persisted nevertheless. Morton tells of the Prince's savvy at coaxing well-to-do individuals and successful businesses to give of their wealth and their time to his charities. The resulting picture is a far cry from the clueless cold fish of popular perception; indeed, the author reports that many of those interviewed for the book wondered why the Prince has been so misunderstood. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about what Prince Charles is really like, and to anyone who wishes to see an example of how the monarchy can make a positive impact on modern society.

The Psychology of Touch
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (November, 1991)
Authors: Morton A. Heller and William Schiff
Average review score:

solid introduction in psychology of touch
This book is a collection of chapters authored by some of the most well-known researchers in psychology of touch. The material in this book does not require to have special knowledge to be comprehended but it nevertheless provides a solid overview of current research on touch summarizing results in different topics related to touch: active touch, vibrotactile perception, relation between vision and touch and many others. Although I am not psychologist and can not judge how current the material is, this book served me as an excellent introduction to the field to get an idea what is currently going, it serves well as a reference and starting point for further exploration.

Public Policy and Statistics: Case Studies from Rand (Statistics for Social Science and Public Policy)
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (May, 2000)
Authors: Sally C. Morton and John E. Rolph
Average review score:

Statistical Case Studies from RAND defy public myths
Sally Morton and John Rolph edited and contributed to this collection of case studies of public policy issues that were conducted by the Economics and Statistics Group at the RAND Corporation. Sally is the current head of the group and John is a former head who is now a department chairman at the University of Southern California. The statistics group at RAND has a celebrated history for excellent and unbiased analyses of public policy data. As an organization they have existed since 1976 but individuals from the group had an impact even early. For example, Bill Rogers was part of the famous Princeton robustness study (published in 1972) while he was employed at RAND.

Many of the leaders of this group have participated in writing these studies including several who have moved on to careers elsewhere (e.g. Bob Bell, now at AT&T Labs - Research; John Rolph, now at USC; Jim Hodges, now at University of Minnesota; and Carl Morris, now at Harvard University).

Those currently at RAND who have contributed include Allan Abrahamse, John Adams, Phyllis Ellickson, Lionel Galway, Catherine Jackson, Dan McCaffrey, Sally Morton and Dan Relles. This is a mix of very seasoned RAND statisticians along with some junior members and colleagues. Several members of the group did not contribute to the case studies but well could have. I was particularly surprised at the absence of Naihua Duan who is an ASA fellow and has contributed to major health studies at RAND. Naihua has also been responsible for innovations while at RAND including contributions to sliced inverse regression and transformation "smearing" methods.

Nevertheless, the collection of studies are both interesting and important to the public and in several cases the findings go counter to the popular information in the media. Well-known Stanford Statistics Professor Brad Efron calls the media statements "misinformation" and "disinformation" and claims that RAND gets it right in his foreward to the book. Many Stanford students and colleagues of Efron had careers at RAND including Bob Bell, Naihua Duan, Carl Morris, Bill Rogers and Sally Morton.

There are a total of 10 case studies included. The first three are categorized as primarily addressing the collection of data (addressing issues in the design phase). The next three are considered to be primarily addressing the detection of effects (estimation or hypothesis testing aspects of statistical analysis) and the last four are considered to emphasize the understanding of relationships.

I have skimmed through all ten case studies and have read case numbers 3, 4, 5 and 7 in detail. The topics are as follows: 1. School-Based Drug Prevention by Bell and Ellickson. 2. The Health Insurance Experiment by Morris and Hill. 3. Counting the Homeless by Abrahamse. 4. Periodicity in the Global Mean Temperature Series? by Adams, Hammitt and Hodges. 5. Racial Bias in Death Sentencing by Morton and Rolph. 6. Malpractice and the Impaired Physician by McGuigan and Rolph. 7. Supply Delays for F-14 Jet Engine Repair Parts by Galway. 8. Hospital Mortality Rates by Thomas and Rolph. 9. Eye-Care Supply and Need by Relles, Jackson and Lee. 10. Modeling Block Grant Formulas for Substance Abuse Treatment by McCaffrey and Adams.

Analysis in #3 indicates that there are only about 400 homeless in Orange County as opposed to public estimates and claims of 4000 or more. Results in #4 indicate that the data are inconclusive regarding a global warming effect. In #5 both logistic regression and tree classification methods are used to show no clear bias in death sentencing based on the race of the victim. In #7 careful analysis of the data reveal that transporting supplies is the key factor in delays for getting repair parts for the engines and not the slow procurement process.

As an applied statistician who does a fair amount of consulting, I always find good case studies to be enlightening and helpful to me in my practice of statistics. These articles are very good and enlightening and they follow a common format. They start with an executive summary that provides an overview and the bottom line results. This is followed by an introductory section and then a section describing the study design, data collection, data sources and elements. The third section deals with datafile creation, descriptive statistics and exploratory data analysis. The fourth section covers statistical methods and models used. The fifth section gives results. Section 6 is a discussion section which may include summary, possible future extensions of the analysis, and conclusion and recommendations. The final section provides exercises. This last section is excellent for a course based on the case studies as it tests the student knowledge based on material learned in the case study. Sometimes self-contained problems are given but in other cases the reader is referred to the casebook web page at the RAND web site where data sources can be found to do the exercises.

In practical work I have always found that a clear understanding of the problem and good descriptive statistics and/or graphics are far more important than the particular method of analysis (which often times can be very elementary). These studies exhibit this principle well. In many cases good exploratory analysis, good design and clear understanding lead to the key results and the appropriate statistical methods. These methods are usually simple and elementary although some are fairly new tools (e.g. bootstrap, tree classification and empirical Bayes methods).

one of the best.
this is really just transcripts of radio conversations between morton feldman and john cage in the 60's, not intended for publication. however, it may be because of that that it is so amazing. much is written about the friendship between cage and feldman, but here you get a glimpse of their relationship in action, shedding light on both the men and their music. a must read. (still available new, as a matter for fact; published by musiktexte in germany)
